The PRP method (autologous blood therapy) is a procedure from the field of regenerative medicine. It is based on the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is obtained from the patient’s own blood by centrifugation. This is then introduced into the scalp via fine injections.
The aim of this treatment is to support the natural environment of the hair follicles. The components it contains, such as platelets, growth factors, and proteins, are part of physiological healing and repair processes in the tissue. Therefore, some doctors use this procedure as a complementary treatment for non-scarring hair loss. However, there is currently no conclusive evidence of its effectiveness in terms of curing or permanently reversing hair loss.
First, approximately 10–20 ml of blood is drawn. This is processed in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is then injected directly into the affected areas of the scalp. This may cause mild pain, skin irritation, or swelling.
The treatment takes approximately 30–45 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. In some cases, patients report cosmetic changes after several weeks. For longer-term use, a treatment interval of several sessions is often recommended – typically three treatments at one-month intervals, followed, if necessary, by a maintenance treatment every 6–12 months.
The cost per session – depending on the scope and provider – ranges from approximately €200 to €1000. Some providers offer package deals that are individually agreed upon.
Since only the body’s own material is used, the method is considered well-tolerated. Nevertheless, suitability in each individual case should be clarified through a preliminary medical examination. PRP therapy can be considered as a supportive measure, particularly in cases of non-scarring hair loss. It is also occasionally used as an adjunct to hair transplants to support the postoperative phase.
Other possible areas of application
In aesthetic medicine, PRP is sometimes used in other areas of the body as well – for example, on the face, décolleté, for stretch marks, or acne scars. The effectiveness of these applications is the subject of medical research.
PRP is also used in competitive sports for certain orthopedic indications. However, anecdotal reports from prominent athletes do not replace scientifically validated evidence.
Important note:
PRP treatment is a therapy that must be evaluated on an individual basis. It should only be used after consulting a doctor. Its efficacy and safety have not been conclusively established for all applications.
